Intent

At Godolphin Junior Academy, we strive for excellence and are fortunate to be part of a diverse, multi-cultural community. Through the languages curriculum we aim to develop an interest and thirst for learning French.

Pupils will gain an understanding of the language and culture in an
enjoyable and stimulating environment. We aim to embed the essential skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing. Finally, we hope to lay the foundations for future learning of languages.

Implementation

Our languages curriculum has been designed to progressively develop skills and knowledge in French. At GJA pupils are taught weekly French lessons  through the Primary Languages scheme which is closely linked to the National Curriculum.

In lower key stage two, we explore patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes. We use partner talk to engage in conversation, ask and respond to questions and encourage children to express their opinions. We encourage speaking in full sentences using familiar French vocabulary and common phrases. Through listening to native recordings, children are encouraged to emulate the sounds which in turn develop accurate pronunciation and intonation and write simple sentences.

In upper key stage two, we look at poetry, songs and stories. Our planning takes
account of prior learning and builds on this. At each stage, the teacher refers to prior learning and carries out informal assessment of children’s stage of development before moving on. Children continue to develop pronunciation and intonation and build on writing more challenging phrases and sentences.
